THE SECRET AND HIDDEN WISDOM OF GOD REVEALED
“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived—these are the things God has prepared for those who love Him”—these are the things God has revealed to us by the Spirit.
You may have heard this Scripture before… possibly in the context of heaven—"the things God has prepared for those who love Him.” In 2 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul shares about a revelation 14 years ago in which he was caught up to the third heaven where he heard inexpressible words which he was not permitted to speak. So while it is true that God has unimaginable things prepared for those who love Him, believe it or not, this isn’t even remotely close to the context of this passage.
Hello everyone, my name is David Erhart and welcome to another Christianity Engaged video. Would you like to know the extraordinary things God has prepared for those who love Him? Today we are going to talk about the secret and hidden wisdom of God that is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit.
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” “The message of the cross” may sound like a common term to modern ears but at the time of Paul’s writing, crosses were not proudly displayed on churches, Bibles, or jewelry. They were bloody instruments of torture, humiliation, and death. It’s like referring to “the message of the electric chair.” It just doesn’t make sense… until you understand the power of the Gospel.
The Apostle Paul spent a year and a half with the church in Corinth and during that time, he says his primary message—and literally the only thought he wanted to focus on—was “Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Thus, he faithfully and meticulously unpacked the profound truth of the Gospel for these believers. He adds that he didn’t do this with “persuasive words of human wisdom” but rather, he did it with “a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,” so that their “faith would not rest on the wisdom of men but the power of God.”
When we speak the message of the cross, Paul says, “we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God.” He then adds that those in positions of power at the time of Christ’s death didn’t fully understand this mystery, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Friends, this is the context leading up to our main passage, where Paul echoes the words of Isaiah: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived—these are the things God has prepared for those who love Him”—these are the things God has revealed to us by the Spirit.
This “secret and hidden wisdom” is no longer an unknowable mystery. Things that were previously concealed are now unveiled by the Holy Spirit. The most profound demonstration of God’s love and divine wisdom is the Gospel, the “Good News” of God’s mysterious plan to save sinners, where God puts on display the immeasurable depths of His mercy and grace while at the same time, upholding in perfect balance His righteousness, holiness, and justice.
God doesn’t dismiss sin without consequence. At the cross, Jesus Christ paid the penalty for all sin for all time. All who believe in Him are forgiven of their sins and covered in His righteousness. The Righteous Judge dismisses their case because their fines, though they are many, have been paid in full.
It is only because of what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross that we are chosen, forgiven, redeemed, holy and blameless in God’s sight, adopted into His family, promised an eternal inheritance, filled with the Holy Spirit, gifted for ministry, empowered to live an abundant Christ-centered life, and so much more!
We can understand these mysteries… because they are revealed to us by the Spirit. And we can know the thoughts of our Lord and grasp the depths of His wisdom revealed… because we have the mind of Christ. This, my friends, is the context immediately following our main passage.
So, while it is true that God has unimaginable things in store for those who love Him, both here on earth and forever with Him in heaven, what no eye has seen and no ear has heard refers to the mysteries that were hidden for ages and are now revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. This secret and hidden wisdom centers on Christ and Him crucified for that is the one event that makes all other spiritual and eternal blessings in Christ Jesus possible. As Christians, we are called to embrace this revelation and continuously seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to comprehend and apply this hidden and secret wisdom of God that has been graciously unfolded not only for our understanding, but also for our transformation.
